Further Reflections

Later on Thursday evening, after the Last Supper, Jesus and His disciples left the upper room and began making their way toward the Garden of Gethsemane.

What lay ahead would be one of the most intense and weighty moments of Jesus’ earthly life.

But even in that walk, there was a lot happening beneath the surface.

The disciples still didn’t fully understand what was coming. Some of them had been arguing about who would be the greatest in the kingdom. Peter was boldly insisting that he would never deny Jesus. And Judas had already set betrayal into motion—a decision that would soon lead to Jesus’ arrest.

There was confusion. Pride. Tension. Uncertainty.

And right in the middle of all of it, Jesus gave His disciples a clear and defining command.

He said, “A new commandment I give to you—that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”

Then He added something even more powerful:

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples—if you love one another.”

In other words, Jesus made it unmistakably clear:

The defining mark of His followers would not be power.

It would not be position.

It would not be recognition.

It would be love.

As we continue through Holy Week and move closer to the cross, this truth should stop us in our tracks.

Because the love Jesus was talking about wasn’t theoretical—it was about to be demonstrated in the most tangible way possible. The cross would become the ultimate expression of that love.

And now, that same love becomes the standard for us.

So today, take a moment to ask yourself:

Am I living with that kind of love?

Because according to Jesus, this is how the world will recognize His followers—not by what we say, but by how we love.

Love is the mark.
