Further Reflections
Around midnight on Thursday, Jesus and His disciples arrived at the Garden of Gethsemane.
What happens here is one of the most raw and revealing moments in all of Scripture.
Jesus asked His disciples to stay awake and pray with Him. Then He stepped a short distance away to pray on His own. But when He returned, He found them asleep.
He woke them and urged them again to pray.
Yet each time He came back, they were still sleeping.
While the disciples struggled to stay awake, Jesus was facing the most intense moment of His earthly life.
The weight of what was ahead pressed in on Him. Scripture tells us that the anguish was so great that His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.
And in that moment, Jesus prayed.
“Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me.”
In other words, “If there is another way… let it be.”
Jesus fully understood what was coming.
He knew the suffering of the cross.
He knew the weight of sin He would carry.
He knew the cost.
But then He prayed the words that would change everything:
“Yet not my will, but your will be done.”
In that moment, Jesus chose obedience.
He chose the cross.
And the reason is both profound and simple:
Love.
Jesus was willing to endure the cross because He loves you.
He was willing to carry your sin so that you could be forgiven and have life.
As we continue through Holy Week, don’t rush past this moment in the garden.
Because the road to the cross was not easy.
But Jesus chose it anyway—out of His deep, unwavering love for you.
