Further Reflections

It’s around 10:00 in the morning on Friday.

Jesus has now been hanging on the cross for about an hour.

The physical pain alone is almost beyond comprehension.

Crucifixion was designed to be slow and agonizing. With every breath, Jesus had to push up on the nails in His feet and pull against the nails in His hands—just to inhale.

Every movement brought more pain.

Every breath was a struggle.

But the suffering of Jesus wasn’t only physical.

It was deeply personal.

A crowd had gathered around the cross. Some came out of curiosity. Others came to mock.

They shouted insults.

They laughed.

They treated His suffering like a spectacle.

And Jesus could see them.

He could hear them.

He was face-to-face with the very people who had rejected Him.

Yet in that moment, Jesus did something remarkable.

He didn’t respond with anger.

He responded with compassion.

He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

He said, “I thirst.”

And even in the midst of His suffering, He took time to care for His mother—entrusting her to John the Apostle.

In the middle of pain, rejection, and betrayal… Jesus chose love.

And that moment speaks directly to us.

Because when we look at the cross, we are confronted with a question:

Are we truly focused on Jesus?

Or are we distracted by everything else around us?

Are we living in a way that honors Him?

Or are we slowly turning away?

Today, as we reflect on the cross, let’s fix our eyes on Jesus.

On His sacrifice.

On His mercy.

On His love.

Because even in His suffering…

He was loving us.
